          The street names around the Kiefernstraße (Fichtenstraße, Pinienstraße) indicate that trees used to grow into the sky here instead of chimneys. Flingern was first mentioned in a document in 1193. It was ruled by the Hayc von Flingern family of knights, who gave the district its name. The knights worked as timber and margraves.

          The Kiefernstraße has been there since 1905, and in 1910 the workers of the Klöckner works – at that time still the Düsseldorf iron and wire industry – moved into the newly built Gründerzeit houses. The factory was shut down in 1975, the houses were sold and rented out, and more businesses were to be built. Squatters killed the plans in 1981. Anarchy set in. Then there were the asylum seekers, who the city billeted in the houses across the street. The melting pot of all fringe groups that a city has to offer was complete.

          Today, the Kiefernstrasse is the most colorful street in Düsseldorf. Squeaky colorful comic figures grin next to the floating Buddha. A slightly grotesque, but still holy Jesus on a trailer that blurs with the facade looks over at us, giant feet make us shrink, a colorful putti boldly keeps watch in the niche of the house.

          Since 1995, the city has left the residents of Kiefernstrasse alone. Nevertheless, the street does not enjoy grandfathering. All around, investors are getting closer and closer.
