The Nijmegen Waal Bridge (Dutch: Waalbrug Nijmegen) spans the Waal, the southern arm of the Rhine in the Rhine-Meuse delta, in the Dutch city of Nijmegen. The road bridge connects the city centre with the Lent district on the northern bank of the river. The Provinciale Weg N325 runs over the structure, which was built between 1931 and 1936 and leads north to Arnhem and south from the border as federal highway 9 to Kleve. The bridge is located at kilometre 25.67 of the Dutch waterway 101 (Rhine–Waal–Boven-Merwede–Beneden-Merwede–Noord) (Rhine kilometre 883.50). The next bridge upstream is the Emmerich Rhine Bridge, about 30 kilometres away. The next road bridge downstream is the De Oversteek Bridge, about two kilometres to the west.

History

Until 1936, there was no permanent connection for road traffic across the Waal in Nijmegen. Instead, a ferry was used to cross the river, which later bore the name Zeldenrust. A railway bridge was opened further downstream in 1879 for train traffic on the Arnhem-Nijmegen railway line. From 1906, the Nijmegen Vooruit (Nijmegen Forward) committee planned to build a road bridge over the Waal. However, after the outbreak of the First World War, construction was not carried out. The planning of a Nijmegen Waal bridge was resumed at the end of the 1920s by the Bruggenbureau Rijkswaterstaat. The planning office, which reports to the Dutch Ministry of Transport, was founded to promote the construction of road bridges over the major rivers of the Rhine-Meuse delta.

The design of the Waal Bridge was based on the model of Dutch and German steel arch bridges under the direction of the engineer P. Stelling in collaboration with the architect G. Schoorl.
