        The term "green belt" stands for the 1,393-kilometer-long former inner German border. Today you can hike a section of the Green Belt, from Fallstein near Bad Harzburg to Tettenborn.

        On the Harzer Grenzweg you can enjoy the extraordinary Harz nature and learn interesting facts about the culture and the history of the Harz. You will encounter historic landmarks, numerous signs on the history, impressive artifacts and significant relics of the German division. On the hiking trail you pass the valley of the Ecker and the Eckertalsperre. After exploring the valley, climb the Brocken. After the descent, you go to the historic Dreiländerstein, the triangular post. From there, you hike past the Wurmberg to the border-opening memorial between Braunlage and Elend. You brush Hohegeiß with his historic landmark collection on the wayside until you arrive in Zorge. From Zorge, your trail leads you to the Cistercian Museum Kloster Walkenried. On your way to Kloster Walkenried you will pass the Ring der Erinnerung and the Dreiländerstein at Jögerfleck near Benneckenstein. The last leg of your hiking tour passes through Bad Sachsa, where you can visit the Grenzlandmuseum, to Tettenborn.

        The initiator of this route is Benno Schmidt, also known as Brocken-Benno. The Brocken Benno is an experienced mountain guide who walks almost daily to the Brocken. By now he has been over 6,000 times on the Brocken.
