After the old church in Lutter had to be demolished because of danger of collapse, in 1867 the foundation stone was laid for the St. Georgskirche. Already on the 4th Advent 1869 it was inaugurated. The neo-gothic style building initially had many ornaments which fell victim to weathering over the years as the Bodenstein sandstone was very prone to erosion. In 1953, even the spire had to be demolished because the destruction had progressed too far. At the end of 1955 the new slate-covered spire with a height of 20 meters was completed.
The organ of the company Gebr. Euler dates from 1869. It was completely overhauled in 2006.
The baptismal font, made by the sculptor Scheppelmann in Eilsdorfer Stein, stands in the nave. In the belfry of the church hangs one of the oldest chimes in Germany. The two large bells were cast in the middle of the 13th century, the small, so-called Ribernus bell dates from the mid-12th century. It is one of the few bells in the so-called beehive shape, which are still rung. She was 83 kg heavy and the church was preserved only by the fact that she was at the station in Seesen of church loyal men stashed away and thus preserved from melting down. It carries the inscription: "Qui conflavere me, cunctos Christe tuere, Ribernus" (All who have contributed for me, protect Christ)
In the years 1990 to 1996 was the major interior renovation of the church. The windows have been restored, the original, colorful ceiling and wall painting restored, pulpit and sacristy renovated and installed a new heater. For the restoration, there has been strong support from the population.
