The North Eastern Railways War Memorial was designed by Sir Edward Lutyens and unveiled in 1924 to commemorate the employees of the North Eastern Railways who were killed in the First World War.

Note a smaller memorial to British Railway staff members and British Transport officer killed in the York blitz in 1942.

Full details at iwm.org.uk/memorials/item/memorial/30905 : "The Memorial in Portland Stone comprises an obelisk mounted on flank walls screening three sides of a podium bearing an altar-shaped Stone of Remembrance. The screen walls bear the names of 2236 men of the North Eastern Railway who lost their lives in the First World War. To the rear of the Stone of Remembrance are 15 slate panels bearing the names of 551 London and North Eastern Railway men from the former North Eastern Railway area who lost their lives in the Second World War. To the right of the masonry memorial, affixed to the abutment to the City Walls, are bronze plaques. These plaques list the names from the First World War and were erected in 2011 due the erosion of the names on the masonry memorial. They were unveiled and dedicated on 11 November, 2011."
