      The lookout tower was built from sandstone blocks in the 14th/15th centuries and maintained by the city of Quedlinburg. Of all the field lookout towers, it was continuously occupied the longest, until the mid-16th century. Council accounts document regular wage payments until 1560, showing that two year-round tower watchmen were employed. From the lookout tower, they monitored a hilly section of terrain at the northwest edge of the fields. The stone-wood lookout tower also provided shelter for the workers who worked in the quarry located far from the city.

      The tower is 11.3 meters high and has a square floor plan with sides measuring approximately 4.15 meters. The tower entrance was originally located at a height of approximately 7.20 meters. The entrance, now located at the base of the tower, was added in the late 1890s. The Beautification Association, chaired by Mayor Ernst Bansi, financed the conversion of the lookout into an observation tower, making it accessible to hikers.
