The granite water artwork by Erwin Otte depicts Saint John Nepomuk. The fountain was built in a modern design in 2003. Nepomuk, made of bronze, holds a cross in his left hand that corresponds to the spires of the basilica. A semicircular light strip with six underwater spotlights runs through the arch carved out of the bridge at the bottom of the pool. These symbolize the five stars that, according to legend, indicated where the body of John Nepomuk was in the Vltava. The bridge represents connections that are of great importance in our world. The stones in and around the fountain invite you to sit and linger.

The figure of St. Nepomuk stands on countless bridges. But only a few know the life story of this saint.

John was born over 600 years ago in Pomuk near Pilsen, a town in Bohemia. He received his education in a Cistercian monastery near his home village and later studied in Prague and Padua. After being ordained as a priest, he became a parish priest in Prague and also a pastor for German merchants.

His diligence and learning were as great as his gentleness and modesty. Because of his excellent character traits and abilities, the bishop made him his private secretary and later his vicar general.

At that time, King Wenceslas IV ruled in Bohemia and was considered to be particularly hot-tempered and ruthless. John Nepomuk initially had a good relationship with the king. But that changed when John became confessor and advisor to the queen. It is said that King Wenceslas wanted to know from John what his wife had told him in confession. But John refused to violate the seal of confession. His steadfast refusal is said to have made the king angry. But perhaps it was also John's firm commitment to the rights of the church, in which John actively supported his archbishop.

John stood up for the rights of the poor in an exemplary manner. When the king wanted to have his cook burned alive because he had allegedly prepared a bad meal for him, John took the poor cook's side against the king. This support for the cook and his refusal to violate the seal of confession made the king so angry that he is said to have personally tortured John with burning torches. John of Nepomuk was driven through the city and then thrown from the bridge and drowned in the Vltava.

Even though these events happened over 600 years ago, John Nepomuk can still be a role model for us today through his actions, because he fought for his beloved church with all his heart and all his strength, he defended the rights of the poor population and kept the seal of confession, even though this caused him to fall into disgrace with the king.
