        Köthen received city fortifications around the year 1200 at the latest, as coins with the imprint kotene civitas were minted at this time. The jumping gate to Neumarkt on the northwest corner of the castle park was only added later (first mentioned in 1462) and replaced in 1763 by the spring gate - which has not been preserved - and was renewed in 1854 and 1855.[4] The Bärtor on the east side of the old town only existed from 1836 to 1874.[5] The situation is similar with the clip gate at the end of the Neustadt, which dates back to the early modern period but was demolished in the 19th century.[6][2]
