The history of the lower parish, as St. Moritz is also known by the long-established Ingolstadt, dates back to the ninth century. It is the oldest church in the city.

The gothic whistle tower, the former municipal watchtower, towers over the actual church tower, where a night watchman lived with his family and ensured the safety of the citizens of Ingolstadt by warning them of approaching enemies or a fire.
