The Court of Savoy was built especially for Margaret of Austria during her stay in Mechelen. A palace that is generally regarded as the first Renaissance building in the Low Countries. Who was Margaretha? She was the sister of Philip the Fair (father of the later Emperor Charles V). First simply Duchess of Savoy, later governor of the Habsburg Netherlands when she came to live in Mechelen in 1507. This made Mechelen temporarily the capital of the Netherlands. She would also breathe her last breath there in 1530, but her remains did not remain in Mechelen. She is buried in Brou, a suburb of Bourg-en-Bresse, France, with her second husband Philibert of Savoy. She had a church built there after his death. She received a statue on the Grote Markt as a tribute to what she did for Mechelen. Since the reconstruction of the Grote Markt, the statue has been moved to a spot in front of St. Rumbold's Cathedral.
