The corridor of the former town of Paupitzsch is now located in the Paupitzscher See southwest of the Großer Goitzschesee. It is located in the North Saxony district in the Free State of Saxony on the border with the state of Saxony-Anhalt. In contrast to the town, today's Paupitzscher See also belongs partly to Saxony-Anhalt. Southwest of Paupitzsch was the Neuhaus manor, after which today's Neuhäuser Lake is named. Its area lies entirely in the Free State of Saxony.

As early as 1218 there was a mansion in Paupitzsch, which was referred to as a knight's residence in 1418 and 1488.[1] In 1459 the knightly seat Paupitzsch appeared under the name Neuhaus, in 1486 people spoke of “dorff and geseß Paupitz czu dem Nawen Hausse”. The Neuhaus manor and the town of Paupitzsch belonged to the Electoral Saxon office of Delitzsch until 1815.[2] In 1610, the Delitzsch council bought the Neuhaus and Petersroda manors and the villages of Pauptizsch and Werbelin in the Delitzsch district and Petersroda and Holzweißig in the Bitterfeld district.

Through the resolutions of the Congress of Vienna, the town of Paupitzsch and the Neuhaus manor became part of Prussia and were assigned to the Delitzsch district in the Merseburg administrative district of the province of Saxony in 1816, to which they belonged until 1952.[3] As part of the district reform in the GDR in 1952, Paupitzsch and the Neuhaus estate, which was expropriated in 1945, were assigned to the newly tailored Delitzsch district in the Leipzig district.

The first mining of lignite using open-cast mining began around Paupitzsch in 1922 with the opening of the Ludwig mine, which, however, was closed again in 1928 for economic reasons. The freed-up equipment was later used in the Holzweißig-Ost opencast mine. In 1944, preparations began in the disused Ludwig mine to expand the Holzweißig-Ost opencast mine (operated until 1962). With the expansion of the Goitzsche opencast mine, Holzweißig-West mining field, the residents of the community of Paupitzsch and the Neuhaus estate were resettled in 1975. The places were dredged (devastated)[4] in 1976 and their areas were incorporated into Delitzsch.[5][6]

        The Neuhaus manor
Caspar (von) Spiegel is documented as the owner of the Neuhaus manor around 1442. In 1610 his descendants sold it to the city council of Delitzsch, which in 1626 sold it to the previous tenant, Magister Gregorius Luppe in Leipzig. After it was devastated in the Thirty Years' War, the Quedlinburg monastery captain Christoph Vitzthum von Eckstedt bought it at auction in 1652. The Vitzthum von Eckstedt family owned the Neuhaus manor until 1787. In that year it passed through the heiress Erdmuthe Dorothea Magdalene Countess Vitzthum von Eckstedt to Günther von Bünau from the Dahlen family, who still owned it in 1812. Friedrich Wilhelm Schirmer from Ilberstedt bought the manor in 1827, which remained in his family until it was expropriated as part of the land reform in 1945.

As early as 1442, the manor, which was described as having a writ in 1518, had inheritance and superior jurisdiction over Paupitzsch. The Neuhaus manor district and Werbelin[7] were added later in the middle of the 16th century. At Gut Neuhaus the church patronage over Werbelin had been in place since 1574 and by 1700/53 at the latest the church patronage was over the parish church of Paupitzsch with the branch churches of Benndorf and Werbelin. From 1533 until shortly after 1753, the Neuhaus manor was united in terms of ownership with the nearby Petersroda manor. The Neuhaus manor district was considered independent for a time in the 19th century, but in 1895 it belonged to Paupitzsch again.[8]
