As early as the 19th century, the residents of Spoordonk asked for their own parish church, but it was not until 1935 that this was actually built. In 1936 the church was consecrated and dedicated to Saint Bernadette. It was her visions in the 19th century that led to the creation of the pilgrimage site of Lourdes.
