The almost 15 m high stone round tower was built in 1952 on Galbokka Point, the remains of an old fort. The construction on Colombo's waterfront became necessary because the Old Clocktower Lighthouse in the city center was increasingly obscured by neighboring buildings.

The new beacon has a fire height of 26 m and is identified by a group of three white flashes with a recurrence of ten seconds. To make it easier to recognize as a landmark, the tower facing the lake is painted black and white.

Note: In recent years, through landfill and land reclamation, a completely new district was created west of the Galbokka Lighthouse, called "Port City Colombo". As a result, the lighthouse is no longer on the waterfront and has lost its former importance.
