The castle, which was probably built in the 12th century and first documented in the 14th century, is considered the ancestral seat of the Stauffenberg family, from whose later line of counts – with a castle in Lautlingen – Claus Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg also came. The castle has an eventful ownership history, most recently it was given back to the Stauffenberg family in 1954 by the Prince of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen in order to set up a Stauffenberg family memorial there. The current owner is Franz Schenk Freiherr von Stauffenberg from the baronial line based in Wilflingen in Upper Swabia.

The memorial, which was built in 1984 and is both worth seeing and informative, consists of a simple wooden cross, a crescent moon Madonna and a memorial stone with bronze plaques on the family history.
