The Puente Nuevo is certainly the most famous landmark in the city of Ronda. It spans the spectacular El Tajo gorge, which connects the old town "La Ciudad" with the newer town "El Mercadillo". The Puente Nuevo is the most iconic symbol and image of Ronda. After more than forty years, its construction was completed in 1793 and thousands of kilos of stone blocks extracted from the bottom of the gorge that protects the Guadalevín River were used. The bridge connects the old Ronda, the Arab one, with narrow and twisted streets, with the new Ronda, the Christian one, with long, straight streets.
