The Catholic parish church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary, also known colloquially as St. Mary's Church, is a neo-Romanesque church in the Lower Saxony district town of Northeim.
The church, built in 1885/86 according to plans by Richard Herzig, stands on the western edge of the historic city wall, between Breiter Weg and Gardekürassierstraße.
Since the Reformation there has been no longer a Catholic community in Northeim. Railway construction and industrial operations only brought Catholic families back to the city after the middle of the 19th century. The Catholic school was built in 1884 and construction of the church began the following year. She received the patronage of the Visitation and was ordained at Pentecost 1886. The ceremonial church consecration was initially postponed because of the Kulturkampf and could only be carried out on September 2, 1907 by Bishop Adolf Bertram.
The church survived the Second World War undamaged. After the war it became home to the many Catholics who came to the city and the surrounding areas as displaced persons. In 1961 the community's kindergarten was opened. In 1975/76 a modern parish center with a rectory was built.
The Visitation of the Virgin Mary is a three-aisled basilica with a recessed choir and polygonal apse. The square bell tower with a pointed helmet rises above the portal in the west, which is expanded into a western building by two flanking buildings. The vaults of the interior are supported by alternating columns and pillars.
The church's original furnishings included a high altar by Carl Dopmeyer. In 1936 the walls were painted by Josef Bohland (removed in 1963). Today's furnishings date from the third quarter of the 20th century and partly refer to the fate of war and expulsion.
