There is hardly anything left of this ruined castle. There is still a larger section of the wall from the north wall, otherwise only two small walls. In the meantime, the ruin looks a bit smaller than it really was due to the large trees.

    Perguntas Frequentes

What remains of Karlsfried Castle Ruins can still be seen today?

While largely ruined, visitors can still discern significant remnants of Karlsfried Castle. These include a larger section of the north wall, the foundations of an entrance tower, and parts of a small palace. The site also features a notable rampart in the valley below, which was designed to block bypass routes and prevent evasion of tolls. The overall impression, however, is that the ruins are smaller than the original structure due to the surrounding forest growth.

What is the historical significance of Karlsfried Castle?

Karlsfried Castle was built in 1357 by Emperor Charles IV, primarily as a fortified customs station on the vital "Gabler Straße" trade route between Bohemia and Upper Lusatia. It was crucial for collecting tolls and providing protection and lodging for merchants. The castle withstood a Hussite siege in 1421 but was burned down in 1424. After being rebuilt, it was eventually purchased and demolished by the city of Zittau in 1442 to prevent its use as a base for raids.
