The year 1495 is considered to be the founding year of the Bärenstein Church, but it is older. There must have been a predecessor, because a priest Hermann de Bärnstein was mentioned as early as 1294. In the years 1622, 1630, 1669 and 1738 the city was hit by violent fires, including the church. After just two years of construction, the church was able to be used again in 1740. The community received great support from the then lord of the castle, Gottlieb Christian von Holzendorf. The surrounding walls and the late Gothic vaulted arches of the choir have been preserved from the original building. The coats of arms with the dates 1519 and 1545 attached high up on the outer wall indicate renovations or an enlargement of the church.
