The route begins in Kössen at around 600m. The Bärenhütte (also the mountain station of the mountain railway) is located at 1,550m. The upper hut just below the summit is at 1,700m. With the MTB without electric support it always took me two hours. With the Bosch motor level 3, this can now be done in just over half an hour. However, the battery is then empty.
The view from up there is fantastic: on the north-eastern side you can see the Straubinger Hütte on the Fellhorn, behind it the Loferer Steinberge. To the left of it are the Tiroler Ache and Kössen. In the west lies the Walchsee at the foot of the Zahmer Kaiser, in the south the entire Wilder Kaiser chain.
If you climb to the summit (1,800m), you can look north over the Chiemgau, the Chiemsee and, on a clear day, you can even see Herrenchiemsee with the castle.
Similar to the Tegelberg near Füssen, the Unterberg is known and sought after by all kinds of aviators, especially paragliders. But this black route with a gradient of up to over 20% is also a treat for MTB enthusiasts - and for hikers too.
