At this strategic location, on a ridge along the old Roman military route Ypres-Bruges, the castle "Hof van Staden" stood from 1546 until its destruction in 1917. (Previously there was also a castle there, from about 1100).
The castle was once the center of an important manor, which was elevated to the "County of Carnin and Staden" in 1712.

The British bombardment that destroyed the castle came about because German officers had established the castle as their headquarters.
It was not until 1958 that the remains of the castle were demolished and the walls filled in.
The local historical circle made a bench with bricks from the castle.
The names of the surrounding streets all refer to this lost heritage: "Stadendrevestraat", "Kasteeldreve" and "Kasteelstraat"... and the nearby hamlet: "Stadendreve".
