The Rosenberg ruins are the ruins of a spur castle at 450 m above sea level. NN high mountain spur above the Mettlachtal near the Rosenberg district of the municipality of Rügland.
The place name is derived from the castle, whose owner Eberhart von Rosenbergk was first mentioned by name in 1398. The castle name is a fantasy name that does not refer to a real situation, as was common until the 13th century. From this it can be concluded that the castle was probably only built in the 14th century.
From the beginning, Rosenberg was owned by the Lords of Vestenberg zu Rosenberg. After that, there was probably no longer any interest in preserving Rosenberg Castle. In 1584 Hans von Vestenberg sold both seats to Ernst von Crailsheim. In 1587 a distinction was made between the old house in Rosenberg and the new house in Rügland. It seems possible that Rosenberg Castle was abandoned when the new Rügland Castle was built. The name Rügland may have originally been attached to this castle before it was transferred to the new seat in the valley.
From the beginning, Rosenberg was owned by the Lords of Vestenberg zu Rosenberg. Kraft von Vestenberg was the first to be called “zu Rosenberg” in 1325. In 1437 the Vestenberg line on Rügland died out, both seats were reunited in one hand with the seat at Rügland Castle. After that, there was probably no longer any interest in preserving Rosenberg Castle. In 1584 Hans von Vestenberg sold both seats to Ernst von Crailsheim. At this point, the small sectional castle was already dilapidated.
The castle area today appears as a trapezoidal plateau measuring 35 × 18–35 m, which is surrounded by an approximately 15 m wide moat. All that has been preserved are a few ramparts and a round corner tower ruin made of bubble sandstone (two-story, with a pointed arch window and embrasures on the upper floor) as well as remains of a ditch and wall.
