Hiker’s Guide through the Galaxy

The boundary stone now marks the border between the city of Hamburg and the state of Schleswig-Holstein. The Hamburg Observatory is located in Bergedorf and therefore on the outskirts of Hamburg, comparatively far out. It was not always like that. The observatory was originally founded in downtown Hamburg at the Millerntor. For many years, the main task of the observatory was to determine the exact time. The observatory's clock system controlled, among other things, the time ball in the port of Hamburg from 1976 onwards. Towards the end of the 19th century, however, observation activities within the expanding city were increasingly disrupted by smoke, light and vibrations. At the beginning of the 20th century, the move to Bergedorf followed, where the new observatory was inaugurated in 1912.
