The Roland statue has stood on Wedel's market square for over 500 years as a symbol of market justice. It is one of the oldest surviving relics in the city.

According to legend, Roland was a knight in the service of Emperor Charlemagne,
who lived from 747 to 814. Knight Roland was greatly revered by the people. Roland statues were erected in many cities in the Middle Ages as symbols of civil liberties.
The statue in Wedel is a little different. On the one hand, it represents the Knight Roland,
and on the other hand, it represents an imperial figure. Roland is a symbol of granted trading and market rights, directly related to the Ox Market.
There are no documents about the erection of the Wedel Roland.
However, the first market sign, perhaps a market cross, is likely to have been erected around 1450. At that time, the previous Lichte ferry station was destroyed by a storm surge
and a new one was built in Wedel. The Ochsenmarkt also came to Wedel this way.
The figure was built from sandstone blocks around 1558.

The Roland's original location was approximately where a small traffic island currently stands at the intersection of Rolandstrasse and Austrasse.
The statue was positioned so that the view was directed towards the Elbe and its back towards the church. After the Second World War, the traffic situation
on the market square required the statue to be relocated. The Roland was restored in 1950, given a different base, and placed in its current location on the north side of the market square.

The statue consists of a total of 32 blocks of sandstone, which were hewn from quarries in Obernkirchen in Schauenburg.
Today the figure is painted and partially gilded.
The base was also formerly made of sandstone, but since its restoration in 1950, it has had a brick base with a concrete core. A coat of arms is inset on the front. This coat of arms, supposedly that of the Counts of Schauenburg, is incorrect, however, as it depicts a heart instead of a nettle leaf. The sword and the crosses on the orb and crown are wrought iron. On the back of Roland is an inscription said to be by Johann Rist. It was only painted until 1950 and was then carved by the sculptor Kolbe from Itzehoe.
