Evert Taube was born in Gothenburg and spent the first years of his life on the Vinga skerry in the Kattegat off Gothenburg. His father was a naval officer. Evert Taube was constantly in contact with the sea and seafaring from an early age, which had a lasting impact on his work. After failing at school, he began an apprenticeship as a theater painter in Gothenburg, but then moved to Stockholm, where he tried a kind of bohemian life. From 1908 to 1910 Evert Taube went to sea as a sailor. His sea voyages took him as far as Australia. Evert Taube spent several years of his life in Argentina, where he pursued various jobs. Among other things, he worked for farmers in the Pampas and as a worker on a canal construction project. When the First World War broke out, Evert Taube returned to Sweden. Evert Taube led the life of a freelance artist and was often in financial difficulties. In 1925 he married the artist Astri Bergman, with whom he had four children.
