The so-called virtue fountain stands in the center of the forecourt of Bückeburg Castle. The fountain was created in 1552 by order of Count Otto IV von Holstein-Schaumburg. It initially stood in the palace courtyard of the then residential city of Stadthagen. It was only in 1921 that he was transferred to Bückeburg. The background is the abolition of aristocratic rule after the First World War. The Free State of Schaumburg-Lippe, which came into being in 1919, had reorganized the ownership structure in the property division agreement: Bückeburg remained privately owned by the prince, while Stadthagen Castle became public property. Adolf II, the last reigning prince of Schaumburg-Lippe, then had the work of art brought to Bückeburg.
