Munster "St. Anna”, Heiligkreuztal
The Minster is without a doubt the center of the monastery complex. The most striking architectural adornment is a large, east-facing tracery window (our picture). In 1533 Veronika von Rietheim had the central nave vaulted and the gaden windows fitted with tracery. The choir window is one of the oldest figurative glass paintings of the Cistercian order. We can guess what impression this glass painting made on the nuns gathered for the choir prayer and convent office when the morning sun lights up the individual fields...
The "Johannesminne" (Christ John group), which stands in a pointed arch niche in the front wall of the choir, is one of the most precious art-historical treasures in the Heiligkreuztal. The masterpiece, carved from a block of walnut and hollowed out on the back, still bears its original version today: Jesus' robe is blue on silver, his cloak is gold, John is in a green dress and a purple cloak trimmed with gold braid. Both sit close together on a bench. The hands rest in each other. Even the folds of their robes run in the same rhythm and swing ...
