After the Battle of Kitzen, he escaped with the poet Theodor Körner, who died in his arms near Rosenow. He was captured by the French after a defeat after a clash with Napoleon's troops. The French executed him on March 16, 1814 in Lalobbe in the Ardennes. In 1843, he was solemnly buried at the military cemetery in Berlin
