After the Congress of Vienna (1814-1815), East Friesland fell to the Kingdom of Hanover. His government made the colonization of the moors a state affair. In 1818, work began on digging a canal from the Jümme towards the north-east near Stickhausen. South of Hollen they dug a branch to the east. This initially ended at the connecting route between Hollen and Detern.

The colonies were assigned in the form of hereditary leases. The first ones were signed in the fall of 1829, making this year the founding year of Südgeorgsfehn. Südgeorgsfehn, together with Nordgeorgsfehn and Holterfehn, is one of the younger fen settlements in East Friesland.

According to the long-term lease agreement, the colonists were obliged, among other things, to dig the canal further into the moor and to maintain it. The colonies were assigned from the south-west to the north-east, so that the colony continued to grow in this direction. Towards the end of the 19th century the settlement of Südgeorgsfehn was largely complete.
