Parish Church of St. Ulrich, Nalles
The church of St. Ulrich was founded in the 12th century by the St. Afra monastery in Augsburg and has been the parish church of Nalles since 1910. From the original church building, which already existed around 1209, only the raised bell tower can be seen, on which the brick sound windows divided by columns are still visible. In the 14th century there was an increase, the onion hood was added in 1866. In 1810, construction began on the present, spacious church, which was completed in 1814 to the point that Bishop Count Emanuel Thun was able to inaugurate it that same year. The construction was carried out by master builder Mattäus Wachter. The architect Cominatta from Rovereto drew up the plan. It is one of the most beautiful baroque churches in South Tyrol with the peculiarity that the wall surfaces are not straight, but are slightly concave on the nave. The mighty vault has lunettes and straps over the pillars and a cranked entablature. The main room is decorated with a scene from the life of the patron saint by the painter Josef Schelsky from Bozen: Bishop Ulrich reconciles Otto I with his son Luitolf. The paintings above the high altar (Annunciation) and on the triumphal arch (crucifix with the three divine virtues and the four evangelists) are also by the same artist. The side altars are made of stucco marble with a simple structure and feature images of the apostles Peter and Paul. The picture of St. Ulrich on the main altar was created by the painter Heinrich Told in 1813. The solemn interior, equipped with a beautiful organ case, turns the church into an early Classicist banquet hall for the Christian community.
