"Together with its tributaries, the Wied forms the main water system of the Westerwald. It rises approx. 454 m above sea level near the village of Dreifelden and flows through the Dreifelder Weiher, initially in a north-westerly direction. After the confluence with the Ingelbach, it changes its direction of flow to the south-east and flows after a second U-turn at the level of Neustadt / Wied from the north in a relatively straight direction to the south until it flows into the Rhine in Neuwied.The length of the Wied from the source to the mouth is about 102 km.
More than 99% of the catchment area of the Wied is within Rhineland-Palatinate and covers an area of approx. 767 km².
The bed gradient in the upper reaches up to the Seelbach gauge is 0.8%, in the middle reaches up to the Friedrichsthal gauge there is only a slight change.
The most important tributaries are Holzbach and Aubach on the left, Mehrbach and Pfaffenbach on the right.
