The Chitral Valley is close to the border with Afghanistan. The Chitral River drains into Afghanistan and is called the Kunar there. The Valley of Chitral is at 1,500 m altitude and lies south of Tirich Mir (7,708 m), the highest mountain in the Hindu Kush.
Chitral is on the Silk Road. For this reason, many influences have worked overtime, ranging from distant Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan to Tibet and Mongolia. Likewise, Greeks, particularly through Alexander the Great, as well as Persians, Huns and other peoples have had control of this valley at times.
