The Vie Cave, sometimes also called Cavoni, form a suggestive road system from the Etruscan era that connects various settlements and necropolises between Pitigliano, Sovana and Sorano. They mainly develop between steep tuff rock walls, some of which exceed twenty meters in height. In Roman times, these streets became part of a road network connected to the main trunk of the Via Clodia, an ancient road that connected Rome to Saturnia, passing through the city of Tuscania and branching off from the Via Cassia in Lazio.

The Via Cava di San Giuseppe is one of the most evocative in the area, as well as the longest, leading up to Pitigliano. This street is associated with the traditional torchlight procession of San Giuseppe, which is held on March 19th. The link between ancient pagan rites and the dark atmosphere along the route, which still persists today, dates back to Christian times, when small niches with painted sacred images, known as "devil chasers", were dug to protect travellers.

Very impressive hike on the paths of the Etruscans who carved these paths in the tuff...in some places you can still see the traces of working.

The Via cava at Pitigliano. A wonderful way. A bit hidden and with a few detours to reach the city of Pitigliano. The way is just wonderful and you should wear halfway solid footwear. Definitely a destination that should be planned in Tuscany Maremma. 😎👍

The “vie cave”, a multitude of narrow streets that lead like canyons through the tuff rock, have also been dug into the area's rather soft tuff. The Etruscans were the originators of this bizarre road system more than 2,500 years ago. Why the “vie cave” were created and for what purpose they were used remains a mystery to scientists to this day: Were the ravines merely connecting and supply routes between Etruscan settlements? Did you serve to drain the rainwater? Or were they mystical places of worship? The proximity of the Etruscan people to mysticism and astrology - and the numerous necropolises that one encounters when walking through the paths speak for the latter point of view

Small, narrow Via Cava winding up the slope in serpentines. Via San Pietro and Via Cava di San Giuseppe there is a beautiful circular walk. Parking is possible north of the road bridge over the Fiume Lente.

Via Cava dell'Annunziata is one of the most peculiar of Pitigliano, it still houses the remains of a small rock church dedicated to San Rocco. A little further, between the terraces, is a necropolis, the ancient Etruscan "city of the dead".

Small narrow paths lead through Via Cava di San Giuseppe. Exaggerated one could say: not for people with claustrophobia! Absolutely worth seeing. The different Vie Cave can be very well connected. Sturdy shoes and sure-footedness are an advantage!

                                            THE TORCIATA OF SAN GIUSEPPE

The Via Cava is closely linked to the traditions of Pitigliane. Every 19 March, on the feast of the saint, just before the spring equinox, masked men carry burning reeds to the d apisotto. When they arrive at the "Piazzola" (today Piazza A. Berni) they pile up the burning barns, resulting in a large bonfire that symbolically burns the Wi vernacciu" in dialect), and consumes itself to the repeated chants of "Evvi, Evvi, Evviva San Giuseppe".

Today, due to its popularity and for scenographic reasons, this "fire ritual" has been moved to a more suitable and central part of the city, where other events lasting several days have been relocated. The "torchbearers" start from Via Cava del Gradone, at the beginning of the bridge over the Meleta river, and follow in line the "Selciata" that goes back towards Pi, digging the night with its fiery disks.

The approaching "snake" of torchbearers offers a beautiful spectacle when it passes under the Medici aqueduct, but above all when it reaches its final destination, the square in the hall where the ritual ends. They circle around the "Invernacciu", the huge and grotesque doll made of reeds, straw and vegetables placed in the center of the square, the torch icing its bells on it and starting the huge bonfire to welcome the change of seasons that is about to arrive.

The happy and cheerful dance of the torchbearers around the pyre and the rhythmic "Evvì, Evvì, Evviva San Giuseppe" accompany the fire that is slowly consumed and the ashes are picked and spread on fields and gardens, as an act of goodness for good harvest. Today this event is considered one of the most unique Maremman traditions.
