This church has a strong symbolic meaning. Le Havre was declared a diocese in 1974 and its church the cathedral. The church is one of the last remnants of the Wilhelminian period under François 1. The bell tower and nave are from the 16th century. The portal entrances and the western facade were created in the 17th century. The church was badly damaged during the bombing. Its tower still has traces of bombs today. After thirty years of renovation, the church, the organ, (a gift from Cardinal Richelieu) and the 19th-century stained glass windows depicting historical scenes from the city, were restored. The square and the cathedral are a little lower than the street. They are located on the original ground level of the city.

When visiting Le Havre, the Notre-Dame Cathedral is a must-see. I was particularly impressed by the cross with Jesus Christ that stands in the side aisle. It was not damaged in the destructive hail of bombs in World War II, although everything around it was destroyed.
