In the 9th century, the Alemanni reached Goms in Valais on their migration from the Bernese Oberland and gradually settled the upper Rhone valley. In the 13th and 14th centuries, individual groups of these Alemanni left the Rhone Valley and its side valleys and moved to other higher valleys in the Alps, such as the Safiental in Graubünden, with the highest Safier settlement of Ober Cemana at 1791 m above sea level.
