The Cathedral of Aosta probably dates back to the beginnings of Christianity in the Aosta Valley region. Excavations have shown that there was already a large church on this site at the end of the 4th century.

The church was completely rebuilt in the 11th century by Anselm I, Bishop of Aosta from 994-1025. The “Anselmian Church” now had three naves like a basilica, with a wooden roof structure and a portal in the middle of the south side. The main apse was designed in a semicircular shape and was located between two bell towers. Many other, smaller additions and conversions followed during the Middle Ages.

A series of architectural and decorative changes to the Cathedral of Aosta took place between the 13th and early 16th centuries and were supported by distinguished bishops and noble families from the Aosta Valley. They radically changed the appearance of the cathedral. The building now received many Gothic and Renaissance elements.

The new facade, built in 1848 in a neoclassical style with statues of saints and imposing columns, pushed the Renaissance facade into an atrium. In addition, the Rosary Chapel was built in 1860 in neo-Gothic style, eliminating one of the 15th-century aisles of the monastery.

The presbytery was redesigned in 1981 due to the liturgical reforms of the Second Vatican Council. Instead of changing the appearance of the former presbytery, which included a marble altar, the space for holding liturgical celebrations in the nave was expanded and a very plain altar was placed there.
