In 1903, one of the first power plants in the region was built in the former Ermen & Engels cotton mill, illuminating the dark Aggertal.
The giant turbines, flywheel, generator, large switchboard and 'electrifying' exhibit show how the power of the Agger was converted into electricity - an energy that fundamentally changed the way people work in factories, offices and at home.

"... Friedrich Engels senior, father of the famous socialist, founded the Ermen & Engels textile factory in Engelskirchen in 1837. Rationalization of production in a large factory and cheap labor were important factors that made the entrepreneur move from Wuppertal-Barmen to Engelskirchen. With over 600 workers in the last quarter of the 19th century, the factory was one of the most important pacesetters of industrialization in the Aggertal. At the same time, the factory's own power plant developed into an important energy center for the region.

Almost 150 years later, increasing automation and low wages in third world countries led to factory closures. Thanks to its inclusion in the list of monuments and an award-winning conversion concept in 1986, the industrial facility including the entrepreneurial villa on the banks of the Agger was saved from demolition. The industrial museum is part of an urban complex that was built within the factory walls in the 1980s: town hall, apartments and shops complement the surroundings of the museum..."
