When you think of Nürburg, you only think of fast cars and tight corners?

Then you're not familiar with the castle ruins of the same name.

Nürburg was founded before 1166, probably by the Counts of Are. Characteristic slate-covered conical roofs mark the silhouette of the castle, visible from afar. Not only the view from the mighty keep is worth a visit,
but also the impressive remains of the former castle complex, which was expanded in several so-called "growth rings."

The Nürburg is the highest castle in Rhineland-Palatinate (676.5 m above sea level). It was built on a basalt, weathered volcanic vent. The basalt rock gave the mountain and the castle their name: Mons Nore, the black mountain. He also supplied the building materials for the castle. When the weather is clear, the keep (39 m high) offers a fantastic panoramic view of the entire Eifel, but also of the heart of the “Green Hell”, the Nordschleife, which winds its way through the woods around the castle.

The Nürburg is now a ruined castle that is definitely worth a visit. Entry costs €3. And you get a lot for that. At the entrance you also get a small information brochure that contains a lot of interesting information about all parts of the castle. You can look at everything very well and thus understand where which building stood. From the keep you have a wonderful all-round view of the Eifel. From there you can also see parts of the Nürburgring and the paddock. Anyone who is traveling near this castle should also visit it. 👍

The mighty Nürburg Castle sits majestically atop the 678 m high Nore mountain, a former volcano. This makes it not only the highest castle in Rhineland-Palatinate, but with its slate-clad, pointed roofs on its defensive towers, it is also one of the most beautiful in the region. The outer bailey still retains the wide rampart and the foundations of a chapel. A short, steep walk leads to the upper bailey, passing the ruins of a gatehouse and the foundations of a gatehouse. The inner bailey is accessed through the gatehouse. The rampart of the upper bailey is reinforced with defensive towers. The foundations of another gatehouse, as well as residential and outbuildings, still stand in the upper bailey. On one wall, you can see a huge chimney, which presumably belonged to the castle kitchen. The keep can be climbed and offers a wonderful panoramic view of the Eifel Volcano Park and the "Green Hell" of the Nürburgring. Source: burgenreich.de/burgruine%20nuerburg%20info.htm
