The Gollenberg is one of the so-called three holy mountains of Pomerania, which mark the medieval Jokbsweg. The tradition of Marian worship in this place dates back to the time of St. Otto's missionary activity.
In 1214 the construction of the first Marienkapelle took place. In the years that followed, the mountain became the most important center of Christian life in Pomerania. In a map from the year 1500, which describes the oldest pilgrimage routes in Christian Europe, Chemlska Berg (Gollenberg) is already marked as a place of pilgrimage. Saint Dorothea von Montau was one of the pilgrims who prayed here during this heyday.
With the Reformation came a break in the pilgrimage movement, all sacred buildings were destroyed.
Thanks to the efforts of Bishop Ignazy Jez, the mountain was returned to the Catholic Church in 1990. On June 1st, 1991, Pope John Paul II rededicated the sanctuary. The current Marienkapelle and the sanctuary also date from this period.
