The Dassenboomse Allee is an old road with many height differences. A little further along this road is also the so-called Badger Beuk. A red beech, named after this alley and with a reference to the badgers that live here. At the end of the 18th century, several new straight roads were constructed from the Montferland hunting lodge. After the hunting lodge, Dassenboomse Allee turns into Montferlandese Laan. Later, parts of the forest were provided with a new path pattern for timber extraction. In old stories, the Bergherbos was not nearly as peaceful as we experience it now, but areas of mystery and frightening events. In the shelter of the forest were the refugees, the deserters in hiding, the poachers, the smugglers, the wood thieves, the robbers and the rascals. A colorful procession of peddlers, seasonal workers, traders, servants and wanderers took the shortest route through the woods. Traveling on forest roads with things of value was risky business. It was then important to have a large wrench close at hand, or a stick or ax and often an angry dog. Various old forest names still echo the fear of the gruesome events, such as Moordkuil, Schhelmsdennen, Stropzonder, Donderkuil. Follow the path you have just taken. Ignore a path to the right and one to the left; go straight ahead at the intersection.
