History (taken from the Stift website)
At this unique place in Twente you can walk in the footsteps of people who have lived and worked there for centuries. It has been more than 800 years since a community was founded here by Hugo van Buren. The commune was transformed into a Benedictine double monastery in 1152, housing both monks and nuns. A century later, the last monks left Weerselo, but the - mainly noble - nuns remained.

In the first half of the 16th century, the ladies formally changed their community into a (noble) Stift. The monastery in Weerselo increasingly acquired a noble stamp. Benedict's official rules were considered too onerous for the noble ladies, so they were relaxed. The ladies also formally changed their community into a "Stift", which means that the monastery rules did not apply to them in full.
