The Thirty Years' War is leading to major upheavals. The city is ruined and goes first under the protectorate of Sweden, then of France. After the war, the city tries to regain its independence, but Louis XIV does not give up his power. Colmar has to yield and becomes a royal city in 1678 by the Nimogue Treaty, but the city is still allowed to keep some of its privileges. Colmar is slowly becoming French ... Colmar becomes the seat of the Haut-Rhin prefecture.

In 1870 Colmar and its region are ceded to Germany. After 1918, the city belongs again to France, to be under German rule again in World War II. Today it is the third big city of Alsace. Colmar is considered calm and bourgeois.
