    The Grote Markt, the highest point in the city, has been used as a market place for centuries. In the beginning, mainly grains were traded there. The city carillonneur has been playing the carillon of the Grote Tor on market days since the seventeenth century.

    The Grote Markt used to be the place where executions took place. The clock in the tower of the Town Hall called curious Breda residents to witness the gruesome spectacle. Nowadays, it is fortunately and above all pleasant.
