Fort Monte Maso was the first fortification in the Italian armored belt, built close to the new border between the Kingdom of Italy and the Austro-Hungarian Empire, after the annexation of the Veneto region to Italy in 1866. Together with the Tagliata Bariola below, it formed a defensive barrier against potential invasions from Vallarsa or Rovereto. The Tagliata acted as a roadblock against direct and close attacks, while the fort, with its cannons, kept the higher-lying Ponte Verde pass under control.

It consists of a single massive casemate surrounded by a deep moat along its entire perimeter: originally, the moat extended to the side of the single entrance, and the fort was accessed via a drawbridge. Built in the 1880s and inadequate to withstand the advances of modern artillery, it was adapted in 1909 with the addition of concrete reinforcement, armor plating, and a 2-meter layer of earth.

During the Great War, due to the front being moved away from Pasubio from the beginning, it never saw action: it was disarmed, limited to its function as an ammunition depot, ordnance warehouse, and observation post.

Beginning in the 1930s, it was first stripped and abandoned by the army; then dismantled by private individuals to recover materials; finally, the cast iron roof was demolished with explosive charges to extract the precious metal for the homeland. For this reason, today the building, although it survived the conflict unscathed, features a collapsed central section.

Of considerable historical interest is the collection of over 150 photographs by the fort's commander, Camillo Canali, who did not hesitate to photograph details of military affairs under military secrecy: this is why it is a unique photographic collection.
