Osor was the capital of this archipelago until the 14th century and was under Venetian control. In their time, the Roman ditch had long since silted up and ships and goods had to be brought about 100 meters over the mainland. The archipelago was so close to Venice that the city extended its rule there early on. The most influential families, such as the Michiel or the Morosini, came into their own. The Doge's son Lunardo Michiel became Count of the island around 1160. However, there was considerable influence from neighboring powers such as Hungary and Byzantium. By mobilizing the Venetian fleet, Ottone Orseolo achieved a similar success as his father had in 998 or 1000. Clergy, priors and people of Arbe, Veglia and Ossero paid tribute.
