The Dwingeloo radio telescope near the village of Dwingeloo in the municipality of Westerveld in the north-east of the Netherlands is a single-dish radio telescope with a diameter of 25 m. Construction began in 1954 and was completed in 1956. It was the largest radio telescope at the time of the world.

Since 2000 it has not been in operation and was officially declared a Dutch industrial monument in August 2009. In June 2012 it was dismantled for restoration purposes and reinstalled in November 2012. The C.A. Foundation Muller Radio Astronomy Station, also known as CAMRAS, then put the radio telescope back into operation in cooperation with the owner ASTRON.

Coming from the sheepfold in the south over the beautiful gravel path, you can already see it on the left in the distance. Thought it was much bigger actually ;-).
With this telescope I read that two small galaxies have been discovered near the Milky Way, which have been named Dwingeloo 1 and Dwingeloo 2.
Since 1998, this radio telescope was no longer used scientifically and fell into disuse. There was no more maintenance. To prevent the telescope from being damaged in strong winds, it was permanently parked in storm position, also known as bathtub position. Because maintenance was no longer carried out, the installation started to rust, and falling pieces of metal formed a danger to the environment. Plans were made to demolish the plant. On January 29, 2007, the CAMRAS foundation was established, which, with the help of volunteers, endeavors to restore the instrument and make it ready for use again. After the restoration, the telescope — the oldest rotatable of its size in the world — became available to radio amateurs, amateur astronomers and educational institutions.
The Dwingeloo Radio Telescope has been a national monument since 2009. In 2011, the government awarded more than 880,000 euros in subsidies for a major refurbishment. On September 12, 2013, CAMRAS reported that the restoration was complete; the official reopening took place on April 5, 2014.
The telescope is used annually during the JOTA for moon bouncing.
