The (outer) Crailsheim or Langenfelder Gate (named after the abandoned village of Langenfeld) is the most important and best preserved of the city gates. It was one of two consecutive gates that provided double security for this city entrance. The inner Langenfelder Gate, which lay in front of the mouth of the Rosenbühl, was demolished in 1826. The outer gate formed the corner between the Schiedgraben and the city fortifications to the east. The approximately 5 m deep ditches on the east and south sides were filled in in the early 19th century. The construction of the outer Langenfelder Gate around 1515 completed the massive reinforcement of the fortifications in the area of the Schiedgraben in the 15th and early 16th centuries.
