The Stadtbad on Mühlenstraße was designed in 1925 by city building director Fred Otto in Bauhaus style. It was built in 1866/1867 (1843 is elsewhere called) replace Hedwigbad on the then Hedwigstraße, which was no longer meet the needs of the rapidly growing city of Chemnitz.

With the groundbreaking ceremony on May 22, 1929, work began on the construction of the city bath. The building stagnated from 1930 to 1934 due to the turbulence of the global economic crisis, so that the bathroom could not be opened until March 27, 1935. At the time, it was one of the largest and most modern indoor swimming pools in Europe with its 50-meter long pool.
