The Saale is the largest and most important river in Thuringia and the lifeline of many smaller and larger, historically valuable city pearls, which line up along the riverbank.

The Hohe Schwarm near Saalfeld, the Leuchtenburg near Kahla, the Lobdeburgruine on the southern edge of the city of Jena or the three Dornburg castles attract attention.
