The Schmachter See is a lake near Binz on Rügen and part of the Schmachter See and Fangerien nature reserve. The Park of the Senses meanders along the reed-lined banks of Lake Schmachter.

Only about 700 meters from Binz's Baltic Sea beach, the Schmachter See awaits visitors in the west of the Baltic Sea resort. This dreamy, reed-lined inland lake is around 135 hectares in size and welcomes you with its very own, quiet atmosphere. The promenade at Schmachter See is a popular meeting place, especially in the evening, to experience the sunset. A signposted hiking trail leads extensively around the lake. By April 2003, the bank area in Binz was expanded and the Park of the Senses was created. The Schmachter Lake area was created towards the end of the Ice Age, when there was a glacier tongue here. The valley developed into a lake, later into a bay in the Baltic Sea. 5,000 years ago, the lake basin was sealed off from the Baltic Sea by the “Schmalen Heide” spit. What remained was a trickle that drained the lowland area of the Schmachter See into the Baltic Sea. The southern part of the lake became increasingly silted up. A beech forest on the northwest bank of the lake is called Fangerien.

In 2003, concurrent with the restoration/renaturation of the idyllic, reed-lined Schmachter Lake, the lakeside promenade with the "Park of the Senses" was created. This park was created as an outdoor location for the renowned International Garden Exhibition (IGA) and opened to the public on May 24, 2003. Particularly noteworthy features include:

              Tasteful planting
Natural shoreline landscape with reeds and waterfowl on the lakeside
              Themed garden with a pavilion
Seven different play and sensory stations and water features
              An orchard
              Maze
              Barbecue area
17-meter-long jetty extending into Schmachter Lake
              Interesting bronze and stone sculptures
              Good restaurant by the park
