Linz Central Station, Linz
The Linz Central Station is a central part of the Linz local transport hub. Long-distance and local routes of the ÖBB (Westbahn, Pyhrnbahn, Summerauerbahn) are connected here with the Linz local railway, the Linz tram, the Linz trolleybus, the city buses and the regional post bus lines.
The first building in the romantic style was built by 1858 on the grounds of the former Gesselböckhof. From February 12, 1891, the station was electrically lit. Planned renovations up to 1920 were never realized and it was not until 1931 that the architect Anton Wilhelm began an extension. A reconstruction in reinforced concrete skeleton construction was completed in 1936; at that time the station was given a high (departure) hall with narrow, high windows.
Plans for a new location followed as early as 1938 as part of the renovations to the Führerstadt, but these were never realized. At that time, a new station was planned south of Bulgariplatz, roughly on the site of today's Wagner-Jauregg Hospital.
After the destruction of the Second World War, the station, which was about 70% destroyed, was rebuilt between 1946 and 1954, again by architect Anton Wilhelm at the same location and incorporating the pre-war building. The station was opened on October 3, 1949, along with the station facilities, but work on the entire site was not completed until 1955.
The current building, with a roof supported by bundled steel struts, was built in place of the post-war building and opened in 2004 after two years of construction. The architect is Wilhelm Holzbauer. This new building has been moved about 10 meters towards Kärntner Straße compared to the old building to make room for the integration of the Linzer Lokalbahn (LILO), which was completed in November 2005.
